Hara-Kiri: Death of a Samurai (2012)

This is a new film by Takashi Miike, starring Ebizo Ichikawa, Eita, Koji Yakusho, Hikari Matsushima.

A samurai had decided to commit suicide through a ritual known like hara-kiri. He arrives at a clan’s residence and begs the opportunity to die with honour. The leader of the clan tries to dissuade him and told the story of Motome, a young samurai that came to the same place a few days ago with the same aim. From this conversation, the director builds his story in three dimensions, by means of flashbacks, while he makes us enter into a love and revenge land.

In my personal point of view, I always have felt drawn to samurai´s way of life. So, this movie is very attractive for me and I hope to watch very soon.

Besides the story, the problems that the characters have to face, the eternal fighting between ancient traditions and personal belief and feelings. In a little world dominated by strong rules and a ruthless life, in what moment do you have to choose who follow? The main character always has to think about this questions. Defenceless against their own philosophy, the samurai lives without the possibility to love actually to another person.

Trying to reconcile two things that demand each be the most important in the life is the constant fight for a samurai. This movie is only an example about this universal discussion.
